Routed in Beauty, Returning to the roundabout of truth…
Working across sculpture, painting, mas, and installation, I approach art as a process of transformation, embodiment, and collective meaning-making. Carnival and festival culture function as central frameworks within my practice.
I reimagine the traditional Trinidad masquerade character Soumayree, a figure connected to the Hindu goddess Durga, as Iron Woman through the Orisha deity Ogun.
I am particularly interested in metal and the possibilities of reimagining discarded objects, giving new form and function to materials considered broken or beyond repair. Inspired by Trinidad and Tobago’s national instrument, the steelpan, born through the transformation of recycled oil drums, I use television screens as canvases and circuit boards as cityscapes within my installations.
My community-based practice is facilitated through Kazillion Kollectiv, an art lab and living archive that reimagines the yard as a site of knowledge exchange. Through collaborative mas-making, exhibitions, artist talks, and experimental studio practices, I create spaces where memory and collective imagination converge.
